Kinja'd!!!2 Kinja'd!!! 23

This trailer has legitimately pumped me up. And I can’t even buy AND run this game! Do it for me. Bring me to, like, Ibiza or Patagonia or something. Also, I’d like a full cut of all the trailer music for this thing.

One thing I’ll be curious about is mod support. If it’s possible, where will the focus of modders go? Graphics seem to be more than sufficient that shader/texture packs seem unnecessary, so will they go for flight tuning? More planes? Potential quality-of-life enhancements? VR before MS themselves announce an expansion that brings in the feature?

Bought this on my computer years , haven’t played it in ages, and certainly can’t run it at this high a quality. I remember attempting to play online because I found it more fun to fly around with other people, but simply put, I didn’t know what I was doing and ended up being “that guy” on servers where people actually knew what they were doing.

I’m sure they’ll be mod stuff, there was for the computer (I believe). And if not, at the very least, there’s some DLC for if you’re really desperate to get something new.

This may be a stupid question but does this version come with Military aircraft, or is it strictly commercial/personal craft?

I finally saw a release date and system specs today and I am pumped. I’ve been using FSX for years, but it feels so old now , especially when it comes to ATC. I’ve invested a ton in add-ons, but it’s just getting too frustrating trying to integrate modern features on to an ancient program that really can’t take advantage of today’s hardware; sometimes I feel like I’m trying to take a car from the ‘40s and compete with modern vehicles on an autocross course - it may be theoretically possible, but not without serious tweaking and the advice of experts, and even then you’re probably still not going to be competitive. I won’t bore you with stories of airports at the wrong elevations or big black boxes where lights should be, but you’re probably already aware of these.

One of the nice things about being older is that now I can afford to have a computer with decent specs so that I can run modern programs fairly well. Just last month I upgraded my desktop in anticipation of this program and for once I’m closer to the recommended specs rather than the minimums. I’ve got more than enough memory (32GB) a decent video card (GTX 1080) a speedy CPU that I can overclock (i5 9600K) and nothing but SSDs for storage. Although it’s not the absolute crazy maximum I could have built it does have more than acceptable performance for the price.

This is what I grew up with. A lot of suspension of belief was necessary to make it seem like flying, but you knew something better would trickle down from the world of military and commercial simulation eventually. Of course, without motion, feedback or visuals that completely surround you the illusion won’t be complete, but we’re getting closer all the time. The capabilities of the modern desktop computer continue to amaze me. Thinking back to my first real desktop bought back in 1991, I don’t know if I could have predicted what we have today, even in my wildest imagination. Sure, you could extrapolate out what machines might be capable of, but then you limit yourself to thinking that such things would only be available to huge corporations or the military. And that starts begging the question - if this is what we have, what to they have...

The list I saw was all non-military (unless there was a trainer in there that I didn’t recognize).

Check out this page: https://news.xbox.com/en-us/2020/07/13/microsoft-flight-simulator-launch-date-announcement/

All airports and aircraft are listed. It appears to be just civilian stuff at this point, but I’m sure it won’t take long for third-parties to start adding stuff and getting on that sweet, sweet DLC bandwagon...

I hope people will mod in older, now non-existing landscapes. Like Kai Tak for example....

Wait, so for advanced airports, they went with Billy Bishop and not Toronto Pearson? What?

If it’s like its predecessor most of the aircraft will be DLC add ons later on it its lifespan including a lot of military aircraft. I feel like DCS is probably more set up for military planes, anyways.

The technical ach ie ve ment is mind blowing. You can fly anywhere in the world, in incredible detail.

Also, if you are able to make mods, there will be a 9/11 mod. I can’t imagine that MS would release this along with modding capabilities without taking that into account. There’s probably a virtual “wall ” or something around the WTC site that prevents it, so somebody will first need to break whatever controls are in place to prevent rebuilding the WTC in game .

Can you fly all the way around the planet exclusively on electricity like I can with planes I build in Kerbal Space Program? It can fly like a solar powered satellite within the atmosphere.

This video goes though the pricing options. $59.99 for standard, up to $119.99 for premium deluxe, which has 10 more HD airports and 10 more planes than standard.

So glad it is not a monthy subscription! Cant wait for a demo to see how my PC handles it :)

Havent been this hyped since I saw FSX at best buy in 2007 and I already had my first laptop. 15FPS max :P

I think I still have my copy of 3DAGS on floppy, but I don’t have a copy of FA:ATP. Maybe some abandoneware site has it available. It wasn’t cheap, but then again, I also shelled out for Precision Simulator, the 747 thing, for $200 I think. I made good money in the defense industry back in the ‘90s and bought every flight sim that came along.

Being a broke- ass middle schooler had many disadvantages, not the least of which was a limited flight sim budget.

I should probably check it out, I’m sure it’s on the abandonware sites. I played a lot of ATP so it would be cool to see how much of an upgrade it would be... Precision Simulator is still like $350 to this day ...

Middle school for me? 1979-1981. Not a whole lot of games available. Hell, most people didn’t even have a computer; I got my first one, a Commodore VIC-20, at the end of 8th grade in 1981 after working every odd job and scrimping and saving every penny. Thankfully my folks matched my funds so I only had to come up with $150. Before that I would hang out at Radio Shack and play with early TRS-80s starting in 1977. The closest thing we had to a computer at home was dad’s portable data terminal with a 300 baud modem, and I’d connect up to BBSs, of course after 7:00 when the rates were lower. It looked something like this:

Kinja'd!!!

I did pay for a lifetime subscription to PMS:IF in Anaheim CA, but the ‘lifetime’ was probably theirs, not mine...

Precision Simulator is now free! And apparently there is a vibrant mod scene for it, including a way to connect it to MSFS to handle the visuals. I’ve downloaded it but I don’t know when I’ll get around to firing it up.

One interesting thing about this site is that you can play a number of the old games right in your browser. I just wasted half an hour playing Lemmings, one of my old favorites from days gone by.

I had a VIC as my first machine, Dad picked it up to learn basic and we pulled it out of the attic a few years later. Was good enough to learn with but the lack of memory was a real issue. We also messed around with hand me down Trash-80s as well until we implored our parents to buy us a PC... for learning...

Will have to check out Precision Sim then.  Lemmings is still fantastic, and Microsoft actually offers it as a free download for Win 10.

I’ll have to look into that Win 10 version. Playing it in the browser certainly worked, but a low-res game like that on a 1440p 27" monitor was decidedly lacking in sharpness. Perhaps if I moved back about 20 feet it would have looked right!

I did purge a ton of computers when I moved in 2012, including all of my Commodore stuff and an original IBM PC that had a cassette port f I r this that couldn't afford a floppy disk drive.  These days I’m fine reliving those memories via emulation for the rare times I feel like playing a little M.U.L.E. - still the best game ever written. The only thing I regret giving away was a tape with a game on it for the VIC that a friend wrote. It was a beautifully polished piece of work that could have easily been a commercial program, and it used all but 3-4 bytes of the 3,583 that the VIC had available.
